PMS & PMDD: when the days before your period change who you are

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) brings physical and emotional symptoms in the days before your period. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is its severe form, with strong mood changes that can affect work, relationships and quality of life. Both typically ease within a few days after your period starts.

Does this sound familiar?

  • “For one or two weeks every month, I don’t recognise myself.”

  • “I’m irritable, anxious or sad, and then it’s suddenly gone when my period starts.”

  • “My breasts hurt, I feel bloated and I crave sweets.”

  • “I argue with my partner every month at the same time.”

How we approach it

We start by tracking your symptoms across your cycle, so we can see the pattern clearly. Then we look at your hormones, metabolism and micronutrients, and decide together which options suit you, with or without hormones. If mood symptoms are severe, we recommend additional psychological or psychiatric support.

If you have very low mood or thoughts of harming yourself, please seek urgent help from your local emergency services or a crisis line.
